Employee Spotlight: January 2022

Terry Kempf, Welder

Structural Fabrication Division

What is something your co-workers may not know about you?

I almost didn’t become a welder.  My original plan was to get my CDL and drive.  When that didn’t work out, I  went to school and started taking my intro to welding classes and loved it!

What are your favorite hobbies?

My favorite hobbies are fishing, camping, spending time with my girlfriend and friends, riding motorcycles, and playing video games.

Before working at Nix, what was the most unusual or interesting job you ever had?

My last job was definitely the most interesting job I have ever had.  I worked at Working Distributors in Evansville for two years as a merchandiser, going into just about every store, gas station, and liquor store stocking beer onto the shelves.  I have met every kind of person you can think of.

What is your favorite thing about working at Nix Companies?

My favorite thing about Nix has to be the people I work with.  No matter what’s going on, they can always lift you up and put a smile on your face.

Are you married?

I’m not married, but I have been in my current relationship for over two years now, and I’m a very lucky man!

What has been your favorite project you’ve designed or worked on so far at Nix?

My favorite project I have worked on would have to be the Dowell Springs job.  Some of the small columns had 1″ filler on them and I like to challenge myself to do my best on whatever I am working on.

Where did you go to school or training?

I got my Associate’s degree for welding at Ivy Tech Community College.

Tell us a funny or embarrassing story while you were at work.

One day I was welding up in the main bay with Derek Greene.  We were sharing the crane to roll and load the beams of the current job we were working on. While he was welding, I hooked the remote to the chains and raised it as high as I could.  He tried so hard to get it get it down but couldn’t.  He was a good sport about it so I casually walked over and got the remote down for him.
