Employee Spotlight: January 2022

Terry Kempf, Welder

Structural Fabrication Division

What is something your co-workers may not know about you?

I almost didn’t become a welder.  My original plan was to get my CDL and drive.  When that didn’t work out, I  went to school and started taking my intro to welding classes and loved it!

What are your favorite hobbies?

My favorite hobbies are fishing, camping, spending time with my girlfriend and friends, riding motorcycles, and playing video games.

Before working at Nix, what was the most unusual or interesting job you ever had?

My last job was definitely the most interesting job I have ever had.  I worked at Working Distributors in Evansville for two years as a merchandiser, going into just about every store, gas station, and liquor store stocking beer onto the shelves.  I have met every kind of person you can think of.

What is your favorite thing about working at Nix Companies?

My favorite thing about Nix has to be the people I work with.  No matter what’s going on, they can always lift you up and put a smile on your face.

Are you married?

I’m not married, but I have been in my current relationship for over two years now, and I’m a very lucky man!

What has been your favorite project you’ve designed or worked on so far at Nix?

My favorite project I have worked on would have to be the Dowell Springs job.  Some of the small columns had 1″ filler on them and I like to challenge myself to do my best on whatever I am working on.

Where did you go to school or training?

I got my Associate’s degree for welding at Ivy Tech Community College.

Tell us a funny or embarrassing story while you were at work.

One day I was welding up in the main bay with Derek Greene.  We were sharing the crane to roll and load the beams of the current job we were working on. While he was welding, I hooked the remote to the chains and raised it as high as I could.  He tried so hard to get it get it down but couldn’t.  He was a good sport about it so I casually walked over and got the remote down for him.

Damaged Tanker Refurbishment

Recently, our Repairs & Maintenance Division refurbished this damaged tanker. The team inspected the unit to find all damaged areas. The main work consisted of rolling and fabricating new tank panels which were then fully welded. After the repairs were complete, which included a new catwalk and pipe work, the tank was pressurized to ensure there were no leaks in the vessel. Our Shop Coatings Team then sandblasted the trailer, gave it a new paint job, and also new decals.

Frame Machining

A fabrication customer needed some work done on frame parts for a roller coaster that was going overseas. We milled, drilled and tapped holes into the parts. There were two of these bases and each was 40 foot long, weighing 20,000 lbs!

Custom Fabrication Division Building Expansion Nears Completion

POSEYVILLE, IN (January 5, 2022)We have been expanding our Custom Fabrication Shop on Frontage Rd., north of Poseyville to add greater crane capacity, taller headroom, and more production space. As of now, the project is still moving forward. We are behind on our original schedule due to COVID-19, and supply chain issues, but ultimately we are moving forward.

Majority of the exterior site work is complete, the building sheeting is complete, crane rails are set (our Structural Fabrication Division is fabricating the bridge rails), electrical / mechanical is 80% complete, heaters are hung, and all doors are hung, but we are waiting on openers.

Up next will be the installation of the crane bridge / hoist, tying two buildings together (once the heat is on), and installing the fire suppression system. With a little luck, we should be operational by the end of Q1 2022.
